  1. Surely there are few opening lines in literature more famous (or more effective) than the one from Daphne du Maurier's Rebecca: "Last night I dreamt I went to Manderley again." And Shirley Jackson begins her story, Before Autumn: "All that summer she had been increasingly aware of the growing turbulence among the trees, and in the grasses, and around the hills..."
